Climate Change as Spiritual Practice
A powerful and unlikely spiritual teacher has arrived on Earth, sweeping everyone into the shadows of its cloak. This teacher has begun to interrupt life as we know it, showing us the impermanence and fragility of our lifestyle. As the Great Climate Migration gets underway, it brings us right to the razor’s edge of this precious present moment. No past. No future. Just what is here now.
Climate Change has the potential to kill countless millions worldwide. It also has the potential of being a spiritual initiator for the evolution of humanity.
How so?
In our day-to-day lives, we are lulled into merely skimming the surface layer. We can easily fall asleep into a homeostatic trance that preserves the status quo, woefully inhibiting our evolution. What can awaken us from slumber is a personal or collective crisis.
personal crisis has the power to thwart our daily routine. Cancer, job loss, divorce, or loss of a loved one can crack the shell of ingrained habit and initiate us into a journey of self-discovery. For Terry Patten, a personal crisis interrupted his life just 3 months ago:

On my 70th birthday, April 1st, 2021, I was hospitalized with a very rare cancer that had metastasized through my lungs to the point that I am told it is “very aggressive, Stage IV, inoperable, incurable, and very hard to treat. The process keeps pressing deeper, and I am becoming increasingly aware that this cancer could lead me into unknowable ordeals of pain, discomfort and indignity. But, mostly, I find myself recognizing that this is not just an enormous life transition; it is something radical at a soul level. The life I have lived for 70 years is complete, over, done. Something new — perhaps a transition to the other side — perhaps, by grace, a new transformed life — would now unfold. In a way, I see this same process for the life we have lived up until now as a species…something new — perhaps a transition to the other of societal collapse and a great hospice project, perhaps a transition to human awakening and flourishing awaits us.
In a way, I see this same process for the life we have lived up until now as a species…something new – perhaps a transition to the other side species extinction, perhaps a transition to human awakening and flourishing awaits us.

A collective crisis has the potential to wake up the masses. The Great Climate Migration serves as a potential species-wide initiatory event. Recognizing the possibility that Climate Change may kill millions can activate dormant instincts, bringing into consciousness such powerful spiritual inquiries as:

Who am I?
What am I to do?
What is my purpose, place, destiny?
What does this mean to our way of being together?
